To the Members and Friends of St. John’s, Irmo:
I pray your Lenten journey has been as meaningful to you as it has been for me this year. We were able to look at ourselves and contemplate our sinful condition and ask God for his mercy, love and forgiveness. And, we are assured of that gift as we look forward to that Easter Sunday morning when Jesus conquered death by His resurrection from the grave!
With experiencing warmer weather, our attention turns to our vegetable and flower gardens, watching the birds play (the humming birds have arrived, at least at Julia Ann’s and my home), fishing, or maybe just sitting in the warm sun. Truly a wonderful time of the year when we experience a new birth in the plants and blue skies of spring. This new birth ought to remind us of the new birth we have in Jesus Christ as he died for our sin and rose out of the dark tomb to give us the everlasting light of his saving grace.
We have ample opportunity to show God how we respond to His great gift by attending the worship services that will be going during Holy Week. First, we will experience our Healing Service on Monday, (the 15th) at 7 pm at St. Michael’s. Then, on Thursday, (the 18th) here at St. John’s at 6:30 we have our Maundy Thursday Service; and on Friday (the 19th) our Good Friday Service. These services, especially Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are very emotional and spiritual services that we need to experience.
Then, on Sunday the 21st, we have the real celebration! The Resurrection of our Lord! We begin with sunrise service at 7:00 (I realize the sun will have been up an hour), breakfast in the Fellowship Hall at ±8:00 and Celebration service at 10:00. I would invite all of you to take part in these services and ask you to invite those around you to participate in these services.
During this time, we have a wonderful chance to renew ourselves in the love of God—to commit ourselves to living as God desires and actually commands us to do. “…let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16).
As always, I thank you for being the church!
See all of you in church Sunday!
In His Service,
John Derrick, Pastor
