St. Johns Lutheran Church History
Irmo, South Carolina
Organized in 1905, the Sunday School of St. John’s Lutheran Church was held in the Old Folk School House, a one room log building with split logs for the children to sit on. Mrs. Carrie Chapman Bradshaw, a charter member, still remembers the cold, misty and dreary weather associated with the Christmas program. Because of the large congregation, the program was held outside so all could attend. After the program each child received a bag which was tied onto a tree and consisted of an apple, orange and some candy.
In 1910 it was decided to build a new “Chapel” for the services. Pictured here is the first picnic between St. John’s Lutheran and Shady Grove Methodist Sunday Schools’ held at the new “Chapel”. Also in attendance were members from the Mt. Olivet and Mt. Vernon Lutheran Churches. A real “Folk Community” meeting.
